Follow your dreams. Be passionate. Reach for the stars. We’ve heard all of these sayings before, right? But, we quickly find out that it’s easier said than done.
Adulting can be challenging: paying bills, rent, spending time with friends, getting through your day and having enough energy left over to work on yourself.
Two of my friends working to reach their goals while balancing all the demands of adulting are April + VISTA.
April + VISTA is a fusion of April George, a vocalist/pianist/violinist, and producer/engineer Matthew Thompson (VISTA). Together they are a genre-bending duo that pulls from an eclectic range of influences and aims to take alternative soul music to new territory.
On Saturday, I went to the first live show of April + VISTA’s new EP “Note to Self.” You can hear it this Thursday, 7/28.
It’s one thing to be front row at a performance, but it’s completely different when the performers are your friends. This experience was a thrilling glimpse into the intimate nature of their art.
“Lanterns had a darker, more ethereal vibe . . . we used light and spacey textures,” said VISTA, the duo’s producer. “But, this project is grittier and grounded in live instruments with in-your-face lyrics. There’s more angst in this one.”
If you haven’t already checked them out, you can here.
They performed at @7DL, a studio and performance space off of DC’s infamous U Street. And, I had the chance to film the entire experience.
My advice to you is to get excited about your dreams and chase them. Make them a priority, even if you’re only able to work on them for a few minutes out of the day – you don’t need hours to make changes in your life.
